Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Reader Response: Ch. 7-8

Chapters 7 and 8 are about sacrifice. First it is because Stacy gets teased and gives his coat to TJ and Mama asks for it. Uncle Hammer gets upset and talks to Stacy. Then Papa comes home and Cassie finds him talking to Big Ma, Hammer, and Mama about using their land as credit.

Also Cassie acts like a slave to Lillian Jean and carries her books and lets her talk (gossip). And one day Cassie says she has a “surprise” for Lilian Jean. She takes her into the woods and throws her books on the ground, stomps on them. Lillian Jean gets mad and hits Cassie on the face. Cassie fights Lillian Jean and makes her promise that she won’t tell or she will tell everyone all the secrets she told. TJ told the Wallaces Mrs. Logan was a bad teacher and got her fired. The kids aren’t friends with TJ anymore.

Chapter 5 was kind of a wide awakening for me. I don’t think I would’ve been able to stand up for myself like Cassie did. It’s kind of sad that a 9 year old can stand up for herself, but I can’t. I think I would’ve felt exactly the same if those events happened to me. I felt kind of bad because Big Ma and the children had to go to the back only because of their skin color. 😦

Chapter 6 was very interesting. I thought it was cool that Uncle Hammer felt bad for Cassie, but I agree he could’ve gotten killed. I was so happy when Stacey got the new coat. When they went to church, though, I felt bad for Stacey because TJ was teasing him. When they were crossing the bridge, I wanted to laugh because the Wallace’s let them pass. Chapter 5-6 were very interesting.

Wow, chapters five and six are just exploding with action and drama! First, in chapter five it was interesting that Big Ma agreed to let chatterbox TJ join the party going to Strawberry. The group consisting of Big Ma, Cassie, Stacey, and TJ were on their way to Strawberry so they could sell land buy different things. Everything was fine until Big Ma left for business and TJ led Cassie and Stacey to buy what they needed at Mr. Barnett’s mercantile. When they went to buy what they needed Mr. Barnett kept waiting on others and ignoring them, but Cassie put up a “fight” with words.

Later Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean Simms and got into an argument with her. I would have apologized in a good way if it was my fault, but Cassie just started walking and said “I’m sorry.” I think that is why Lillian Jean didn’t accept the apology and wanted Cassie to get in the road. But I am pleased with how bravely Cassie acted and didn’t give up until Mr. Simms pushed her down. The day in Strawberry was not a good day for Cassie.

In chapter three, I thought it was funny when the bus crashed in the washout! It seemed like what goes around comes around when the white students had to walk home. I feel this way sometimes when the kids get in trouble who never do but deserve it.

Chapter four seemed very similar to me, just sitting with my mom talking about family history. It is interesting to learn where we came from because I think it gives insight on what’s ahead.

In the first chapter, it explains a little bit about what life was like for a colored family in this time. The book starts off talking about how Little man was walking too slow, meaning that they had to walk to school. This first chapter sets up the life of the Logan children and give you only the basics. In chapter two is when it explains more about them and how hard life is.

Honestly I didn’t think that I would like this book in the beginning, but just like every other movie, book, tv show, etc…you get to know the characters and you begin to like it and become more interested. Chapter one was informative to me, I didn’t know most of those things actually happened. I really enjoyed learning about this even though it’s very sad how the Logans were treated. Chapter two was more exciting because the children are told not to do some things, so it makes you wonder if they are going to listen.

This week we did a lot of things in class. We talked about the plot diagram and all the different parts that make it up.We also talked about characterization and the different parts of it.  The other thing we talked about was types of point of view in a story. For example, third person omniscient is where a person outside the story knows the thoughts and actions of all the characters in the story.

The one story we read was “The Last Dog.” It is a good story. Its setting is some time in the future. There are no rivers, no trees, no grass, and no moms, but then one kid goes out to find it all. He also finds the last dog. That’s what we’ve learned so far this week.

September 3-6

This week is a four day week because there was no school on Monday because of Labor Day. On Tuesday, our language arts class was in the computer lab. We had been reading a story in our literature books called “Zebra.” Zebra was the main character in this story. The class was told to write a letter to Zebra on My Big Campus convincing him why or why not he should take the art class that John Wilson was providing over the summer. After we were finished, we sent it to Miss Bair.

Then, on Wednesday, at the beginning of class, the class had a chance to read for AR or to go to the library. After the 15 minutes, we took notes on direct characterization, indirect characterization, and how authors use indirect characterization. Then we each got a slip of paper that had a shoe on it. To get the extra credit, you have to write a two page story about a person that would wear these shoes and about their personality. That is what I learned in Language Arts this week.

August 26-30

This week in Language arts/Literature, we finished our story about a boy named Adam, or Zebra. He had a passion for running and got in a bad accident, causing him to not be able to run again and damage his hand badly. After we finished the story we discussed it together as a class. Throughout the story we made future predictions, asked questions, and summarized what we rad.

After, we started to take notes on the elements of writing. We took notes on plot diagram and different types of conflict.
